A recent Golden Age Games competition in Missouri underscored the benefits of finding fully staffed nursing homes for loved ones.
Joe Hickman of KY3-TV reports on the 24th annual challenge which featured 150 residents from 14 skilled nursing facilities competing in events such as basketball throws, soccer kicks, cow milking – and a spirited hog-calling contest.
“It’s about competition,” said Mike Baldus of Lacoba Homes, the senior care community in Monett, Missouri that sponsors the event. “That is a human nature that is ingrained in people that is still there until the very end.”
Many residents dressed up in their teams’ corresponding attire including pirates, and Dr. Seuss’s “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.”
“They just love coming out and doing fun things just to laugh and feel young again,” explained Keri Creasey, the Activities Director for the Mt. Vernon Veterans Home.
Feeling young can only help nursing home residents stay healthier and happier too, according to John Dalli, a partner in the law firm Dalli & Marino, LLP.
“Events such as these are positive reminders about how important it is to find a nursing home that’s fully staffed and committed to its residents. Seniors can suffer physically and mentally when they don’t get the full attention they deserve. When they do, they thrive.”
